Reading Time FAQ
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is estimated by dividing your word count by a reading speed. TextLimits uses 238 words per minute by default — a commonly-cited average for adult silent reading. Use the speed controls above the counter to adjust for your audience.
What is the average reading speed?
Many adults read silently at around 200–250 words per minute. Complex technical material may be slower; light or familiar content may be faster. TextLimits uses 238 wpm as a broadly representative default.
How is speaking time different from reading time?
Speaking time is slower than reading time because it includes natural pauses, breathing and delivery rhythm. TextLimits uses 130 words per minute by default for speaking — you can adjust this with the speed controls.
How many words is a 5-minute read?
At the default 238 wpm reading speed, a 5-minute read is approximately 1,190 words — typical for a short-to-medium blog post. If you adjust the speed controls, your result will differ.
How many words is a 10-minute speech?
At the default 130 wpm speaking speed, a 10-minute speech is approximately 1,300 words. At a slower, more deliberate 100 wpm, it is closer to 1,000 words.
Can I change the reading speed?
Yes. Use the Reading speed controls in the stats panel to choose Slow (150 wpm), Average (238 wpm), Fast (300 wpm), or enter a custom speed. Speaking speed can also be adjusted between 100, 130 and 160 wpm, or set to a custom value. The reading and speaking times update instantly.
What is a good blog post reading time?
Most standard blog posts fall around 4–8 minutes, while shorter updates may be closer to 2–3 minutes. Long-form guides typically run 10–20 minutes. The right length depends on your topic, depth and audience — paste your content above to check before publishing.
